South Africa Volunteer Project

Cape Town, South Africa

Volunteer at a facility that rescues abandoned and abused domestic animals, and helps rehabilitate them in the hope of finding them a new loving home. This facility works towards the rescue and rehabilitation of animals in need, within a local community located just outside Cape Town city centre. The residents of this community live in extreme poverty, well below the poverty line, and this has resulted in a huge problem with stray animals/pets in the area! Due to the tough economic and social situation in this area, these animals are often neglected and left to fend for themselves, often resulting in starvation and/or sickness. Because of this ever-growing problem in the area, this animal rescue centre was established. The centre is a pro-life (everything is done to cure the animals instead of putting them down), non-profit organisation that rescues, cares for, and sterilizes stray dogs and cats, with the hope of eventually finding new loving homes for them. Due to financial constraints, the centre is only able to employ a handful of staff – they are therefore heavily dependent on volunteer help and donations.

Here, volunteers will be working with Infant babies to 6 year old – certain creches only accept children that are 3-6 years old. Opening Times are Mondays to Fridays from 07:00 to 17:00 (this may vary depending on the specific creche or kindergarten). Most volunteers day end by 1 pm when the children have their nap time. It important to have patience, flexibility and willingness to help where needed.

Volunteers are placed at a Primary School, where our Schools vary according to location, resources and level of trained staff, classrooms are overcrowded (40+ learners per class) etc. There are limited facilities and little or no recreational activities (e.g. sport and art). Age of the Learners are 6 years to 13 years old and Opening Times are Mondays to Thursday from 08:00 to 14:30 and Fridays from 08:00 to 12.30 (this may vary depending on the specific school).

The Physical Education program runs in conjunction with our Primary Schools where Volunteers are placed at local public/government Schools. Majority of the Schools does not have equipment to conduct a Sports Program and volunteers are to be flexible and use their initiative. Volunteers will only have 1-3 periods of Physical Education per day, approximately 1-2 hours only and the rest of the day they will be required to assist the Teachers in the classroom with lessons. This can vary depending on the activities planned for the day, or the volunteer’s creativity and initiative to conduct their own Physical Education lessons with the children.

Volunteers are placed in local Community day-clinics. Most of the medical clinics are understaffed and there is a lack of resources and therefore this can be a very stressful and challenging environment to work in. These Clinics are government funded facilities for people who cannot afford private medical care. There are no overnight patients and no major operations are done here – these are referred to bigger hospitals. Opening Times - Mondays to Fridays from 07:00 to 16:00.
